Lina paints verdant imagined interiors and still-lifes where dreams, waking life, control and instinct meet. Her corridors, kitchen and stairways overgrown with plants or flooded with seawater are sometimes inhabited by a panther or snake, sometimes empty but vibrating with potential. Lina’s bold, expressive work is rendered in luscious colour using a combination of loose, gestural brushstrokes against fields of flat saturated pigment.
For Lina the interior represents the Self, inspired by her dream archive and drawing from Jungian Psychology and Surrealism. Rather than illustrating dreams directly they inform her work, shaping decisions about atmosphere, spatial organisation, rhythm, colour relationships and symbolic motifs.
‘These spaces reveal psychological states. The house in my work functions as a portrait of the psyche. Its shadows, ruptures, animals, and quiet rooms serve as archetypes through which subconscious material emerges from the dream landscape into visual form. My interiors operate like containers for psychic weather, some hold turbulence; others hold silence.’
Lina has travelled extensively, growing-up Colombia, training and working in Colombia, Norway and America and now putting down roots with her family in London. During periods of illness, migration and professional uncertainty Lina found solace in recording her dreams. The daily practice of recording and identifying recurring images and symbols formed continuity when life appeared fragmented and now forms the dream archive which has become part of her artistic practice.
‘What began as a personal need developed into an archive that shapes the way I think and work in the studio.’
